Big Family Blessings Bigger for Four Days

So do the words "big" and "bigger" here modify "family" or "blessings"? Actually, both.

We've been busy this week and I've not written much. For one reason, our family size had been temporarily increased from 4 children to 7 children! A good friend and neighbor of ours became very ill Tuesday afternoon, and had to go to the hospital via an ambulance. She was in such bad condition that they had to fly her out to a bigger hospital and she spent some time in ICU! We were in a position to be able to take care of her 3 youngest children while she was in the hospital: a 9-year-old boy, 7-year-old girl, and a 2-year-old girl.

Thankfully, their mom is much better now and was able to come home this afternoon, but from Tuesday afternoon until Friday afternoon, our family size was altered, and we got a peak at what our family would look like with 7 children: a 14 year old, 13 year old, 9 year old, 8 year old, 7 year old, 6 year old, and 2 year old! We were a sight entering the church house Wednesday night, where we were already the largest family before our additions!

At our house, our two boys share one bedroom and our two girls share another bedroom. Now there were 3 in the boy's room and 3 in the girl's room. They used the camping cot or made up beds on the floor and I think they took turns sleeping in different places. Our children enjoyed having company and I think everyone had as good of a time as possible! They played games with each other and read books to one another, and we tried to reassure the children that God had everything in control.

Lisa slept with the two-year old in the living room and let me have our bedroom to myself. She is an amazing woman and handled the situation marvelously! She felt the most stress and responsibility, of course, (I went to work each day) but she rose to the occasion.

During meals, we all squeezed around the table, and were able to function pretty much like normal. Last night we even had an incredible meal of steak, potatoes, green beans, corn, and breadsticks! If God allows us to have more children of our own someday, we will count it as a great blessing!

It has been a tiring week, but I am glad we were able to help out a friend in need. We are also very thankful that our prayers were answered and that she is OK now. Please pray for her and her family as she recuperates.

By the way, our pigs Nellie and Sally have done well during their first week with us and the children have been feeding them and making sure they have water. Matthew and I did get a little done on the barn and pig lot. We repaired some of the inner walls that were leaning and the door that leads to the steps to the loft. We also got the posts in the ground for the pig lot, attached a top rail to the posts, and got up most of the fence around the lot. I chose to use a cheaper fence of galvanized metal only 3 ft high for about $19 but we are also going to use wooden rails across it and bury some old roofing tin around the bottom. When I get my new computer on-line, I'll see if I can post some pictures of our progress.

It has been raining here for 24 hours and Pure Water Hollow is filled up with water right now! Hopefully, we will have some dry moments this weekend so I can finish the pig lot. I want Sally and Nellie to be able to go outside and get into the dirt and roots and things. They will not get to be free-range pigs, but at least they will have a good-sized lot!

Until next time,

Counting our blessings!
