Rattlesnakes In the Garden

Rattlesnake Pole beans, that is!

This is the first year that we have grown pole beans and the heirloom variety Lisa chose is a bit unique, I think. They are called Rattlesnake Pole Beans and are unique because of the pretty purple stripes on some of the beans!

They grew very well on the river bank and yesterday we finally picked them. They have grown to be a bit larger than I would have liked, but are still firm and succulent. I liked the taste of this variety raw better than the other varieties I have tried this year, so I imagine they will be great cooked!

One drawback is that they are not "stringless" like the other heirloom varieties we are growing, so they will take a bit longer to prepare.

We only made 5 "teepee" structures out of the bamboo canes for these beans and we left one loaded with beans to use as seed if we decide to grow these next year. Of the 4 other "teepees" we got about a bushel of beans, which I thought was pretty good considering the small amount of room they took up!

Rattlesnakes in the garden are a blessing if I'm referring to pole beans! Thank you Lord!
