Here are a couple of pictures from the recital. The spotlights did not seem to agree with my camera, it seems, but I like the pictures anyway!
Our weather has continued to be of the winter variety! Everything was still covered yesterday in ice and snow, although the landscape and especially along the road sides and parking lots was beginning to get into that dingy, dirty look. This morning it was nice to wake up to a fresh inch of pristine white snow on top of the several inches still laying around! A possibility of more freezing rain is in the forecast for tonight, and they think there may be another winter storm coming in around Friday, Christmas Eve.
The bad thing about all this winter weather is the nice Christmas activities that have been canceled. Simon's piano recital was rescheduled once because of the snow, and is now canceled. Also the fire department decided to cancel their annual Santa run. It has been hit or miss to get the Christmas programs completed for many churches and organizations this year.
It hasn't just been Christmas activities that have been impacted. Many offices and businesses have had to alter their hours. The local school system I work for did not get to finish out the semester before Christmas Break, either, which didn't bother too many folks that I know of. We had to miss the 3 days that were scheduled for this week, all 5 days last week, and 2 days the previous week. It is very unusual for our school system to miss 10 days of school for snow before Christmas!
Speaking of unusual, the weather man in Hazard has reported that this is the snowiest start to a winter season since records began in 1981 at NWS Jackson! We still need a couple more inches for December 2010 to go down as the snowiest December on record, which seems to be a sure thing. He said the number 1 snowiest December on record for our area is currently last December, with 17.6 inches! This December is also the coldest one on record. He has records dating back to 1954 in the temperature department and our average cold has beaten the coldest December so far, by 3 degrees! The 1958 December had been the coldest on record with 29.4 degree, but he said 2010 has a 26.1 average so far!
Things are shaping up for a special winter! It looks like our dreams of a white Christmas may come true, this year!
